Who were the Vikings?
Barbarians? Scandinavian Pirates? Raiders?
The Vikings, also known as Norsemen, were seafaring warriors best known for raiding monasteries, invading lands and creating settlements in mostly northern Europe but also places as far as North America and Africa. Originating from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, this vast group of Scandinavians explored Europe and numerous other countries between the eight and eleventh centuries, which is also known as the 'Viking Age'. Over those three centuries, the Vikings made a dramatic mark on history. Known as traders, raiders, pirates and settlers, without the Viking influence, the world would be a very different place today.
